Summarizing the global issue

Goal:

Students will summarize what they have learned about child soldiers and write a persuasive paragraph about why this is an important global issue (this will become part of the first paragraph of students' position paper).
  • Guiding Questions:
    • Why is the issue of child soldiers important for the UN to address?
      • What are the relevant goals of the UN? And of important documents that the UN has passed?
      • What are child soldiers? Why are child soldiers such an important problem?
      • Why is this an international issue not just a local one?

Content Objective:

Students will be able to explain why child soldiers is an important global issue and why their country cares about it.

Langauge Objective:

TBD depending on final agenda, see this article for support in writing language objectives.

Vocabulary:

No new terms (spiral relevant terms in the unit)

SEI Strategies:

Use a graphic organizer to help students organize their ideas. One graphic organizer to use might be a describing wheel. Students brainstorm ideas that 'fill the wheel and then use these ideas to write a paragraph that answers the question. 'Slices' of the wheel might include:
  • Definition of child soldiers
  • # of child soldiers in world
  • # of child soldiers in country
  • Why there are child soldiers
  • What child soldiers experience
  • Where there are child soldiers
  • Why child soldiers violates UDHR
  • Why child soldiers violates the Convention on the Rights of the child
  • etc..



Suggested Agenda:

1. Introduce the assignment: write a persuasive paragraph about why child soldiers is an important a global issue and why your country cares about it.

2. Tell students to go back through their notes and reading and highlight/annotate evidence that may be relevant to this paragraph and put their ideas in the describing wheel.

3. Students write paragraph individually
